Alpacas are the most delightful animals to own. They make great pets and are easy to look after. There is a huge alpaca market in America, Australia and New Zealand and a rapidly developing European market. We see no reason why alpacas cannot be just as successful in Spain.

Alpacas come in two varieties of coat, huacaya and suri. Huacayas have the shorter, woolly coat and suris have the dreadlocks.
95% of all alpacas are huacayas and only 5% are suris.

There are two distinct markets for alpacas—
the pet and the exhibition/investment market.
If pets are what you want then three alpacas would be a minimum. Alpacas are herd animals and cannot survive alone.
If breeding is your interest you need to decide whether to breed for the pet market or the exhibition/investment market. As top quality animals command top prices we strongly suggest starting with good pet females to see if breeding alpacas is for you.
You can always improve the quality of your herd by using good quality males on your females.
There are more or less 53,000 alpacas in the United States, 40,000 in Australia and 20,000 in the United Kingdom. Here in Spain we have less 400.
